Talking About: Too Much Weight Loss

I wasn’t going to mention it but the buzz about the Biggest Loser, Rachel losing too much weight hasn’t lost any steam in the last two days. Everywhere I look there’s something about Rachel being “too skinny,” and the Biggest Loser being a “bad show” because of rapid unrealistic weight loss. I’m dying to know what you guys think! Do you watch the Biggest Loser? Does the show motivate you, or do you agree with the nay-sayers that it’s too much weight loss, too fast.

And what about Rachel? Is she too skinny? How does she compare with last year’s winner, Dannielle?

Another question: is saying someone is too skinny the same as saying they’re too fat? Body shaming is body shamming, right? Should America just butt out? Share your thoughts!

  1. I am so interested to know your opinion on this one, Sara.
I cringe when I hear “too skinny” comments. I realize that we all have opinions about what looks good, but I don’t think body shaming is okay.

The Biggest Loser used to be a favorite of mine. I always found it very inspiring and exciting. A loved one who had lost and gained weight; who is now on the journey to get healthy (thanks, in part, to you recommending a fitness tracker), finds the show difficult to watch. Hearing their point of view, I now understand that it came be frustrating to see people lose weight so, so quickly between the editing and the fact that the show is basically the contestant’s full-time job. We all know is doesn’t happen like that in the real world.

I’m happy for the cast, thrilled that there’s a nice jackpot involved, but I now realize that is might not be as uplifting to others as I find it.

Hey Jeannine! Thanks for commenting!!! I didn’t share my opinion because I’m honestly not sure what to think! I’ve only ever watched a few episodes of The Biggest Loser and I always thought it was motivating (especially Jillian’s no non-sense attitude)! However, I completely understand the concerns people have about rapid weight loss, and the show projecting unrealistic expectations on viewers.

Personally, I don’t like that it ends after contestants reach a certain weight! It completely dismisses one of the the most difficult things about weight loss — keeping it off! — which a lot of people will tell you, can be more challenging than losing the weight in the first place.

As for Rachel, I hope she can find self-acceptance among all the fuss the world is making about her losing too much weight. Self-acceptance is hard work and it’s probably been made a lot harder for her being in the limelight! Too fat or too skinny is really irrelevant as long as SHE loves her body and treats it right.
